Congratulations to all the exhibitors at the Autumn Show! It was great to have this traditional village show back after a gap of two long years and the displays of exhibits were colourful, attractive and enjoyed by all.
This 19th annual Autumn Show proved to be a great success thanks to the 107 exhibitors who entered 276 exhibits. These numbers are very similar to those of the last Autumn Show in 2019 and it was reassuring to see that the level of support was not diminished by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Various Covid safety measures were in place. We also seemed to have luck on our side! The weather was good, so the extra ventilation worked well and the outdoor seating area in the gazebo was comfortable, restful and popular.
There were other changes to this show, as well as the Covid safety measures. There were no entry fees for exhibitors and no cash prizes for the winners. Winners of the adult classes were presented with a personalised certificate and the trophy (to hold for a year), whilst the second and third places exhibitors received rosettes (instead of the small cash awards previously used).
When it came to the presentation of the prizes, the adult trophy winners were Mavis Haggar for Flower Arranging, Ray Keppler for Flowers, Michael Clark for Vegetables & Fruit, Terry Brand for Arts & Crafts, Terry Brand for Photography and Hilary Tipping for Culinary. The Shire Park Bowling Club President’s Shield for horticulture was won by Ray Keppler, who also won the RHS Banksian Medal.
The Tewin Cowper School Parents’ Association Award is usually presented to the exhibitor with the highest number of points in the children’s classes for horticulture, arts & crafts and culinary. This time, the competition resulted in a tie for first place and the joint winners were Erin Murray and Annabel Goodison. They were both presented with the well-earned winners’ certificate and will each hold the trophy for six months. Unfortunately, there were no entries in the childrens photography class, so the George Humble Crawford Award for Children’s Photography was not awarded. A full list of all the prize-winners is shown below.
Here is a slideshow of photographs of the show, including the five winning images from the adult photography class and pictures of the display of produce from the Tewin Cowper School allotment.
Many thanks to everyone who helped at the show: -
- The staff, helpers and children at Tewin Cowper School and at the Tewin Under-Fives Pre-school group, who have been very enthusiastic and supportive
- The judges, who give their time and expertise freely
- The Judges’ Stewards, who helped the judges and recorded the results
- Linda Crawford and the team of volunteers for lunch for the judges, refreshments in the afternoon and washing up
- Michael Clark for taking the photographs of the prizegiving
- The committee, who worked so hard to make the show a success
- All the helpers behind the scenes, setting up and clearing the hall, making cakes for the afternoon refreshments.
- All the exhibitors, without whom there would be no show!
The show could not have happened without this incredible support so do please remember that your help is greatly appreciated and never taken for granted. Thank you all very much!
If you have any comments about the show or suggestions for improving future shows, then please let me know. I would be particularly interested in any suggestions you may have about how to make the schedule more appealing to potential exhibitors and how to generate more interest and entries.
