The THACS Spring Show will be held in Tewin Memorial Hall on Saturday 6th April. There will be show classes covering flower arranging, flowers, arts & crafts, photography and culinary, so I am sure that you can select some suitable categories to enter. Please come along, have a go and support your village show.

We have relaxed the eligibility criteria to enter the show, so do please encourage your friends and relatives to enter.

The Adult & Child Class was introduced last Spring and returns for this show in expanded form (not just arts & craft, but baking too!). For entries in this class, a child would pair up with a suitable adult (ideally a family member) and they would each produce the specified item.  For example, they could each make a drawing or painting of the same thing. The resulting pair of pictures would make up the exhibit. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third Adult & Child pairs. If you are a parent / guardian / grandparent / aunt or uncle, this is a great opportunity for you to get together with that child and have some productive fun together, whilst helping them to develop their skills (and maybe your own). Go on, try it!

The Show Schedule can be down-loaded by clicking Here or you can get paper copies from Tewin Stores after 4th March. Once you have the Show Schedule, you’ll be able to see all of the options and then select which ones to enter before submitting your completed entry form (and any entrance fees) by Sunday 31st March. The entry forms are in the Show Schedule but you can download the Adult & Child entry form by clicking Here or download the Individual Adult or Child entry form by clicking Here

Even if you’re not entering anything yourself, you will be welcome to see the show - free of charge – when the doors open to the public at 2:00pm. You will be able to see all of the exhibits in the main hall, corridor and Parish Room and to indulge in tea and cake before the presentation of prizes at 3.30pm. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to purchase some of the exhibits yourself, in aid of Digswell Nurseries.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Attendees at the THACS AGM were invited to select their preferred garden visit from a shortlist of four. The most popular choice was Cliveden, which is a National Trust estate near Maidenhead, Buckinghamshire. This was a good choice, since Cliveden’s stunning house and gardens are a perfect destination for a group day out. There's something for everyone including beautiful seasonal floral displays, an outstanding sculpture collection and tours of the house. THACS has arranged a visit by coach on Thursday 11th July, so come along for a great day out.

Set high above the Thames with far-reaching views, Cliveden’s impressive gardens and majestic woodlands capture the grandeur of a bygone age. You will be able to follow in the footsteps of dukes, earls and royalty as you explore a series of gardens, each with their own special charm. From the formality of the Parterre with its vibrant floral displays to the quirky statuary and topiary in the Long Garden, the gardens will delight you in every season. The formal gardens give way to secluded glades, tree-lined avenues and picturesque riverside with miles of woodland walks to discover.

The stunning Italianate mansion is leased as a private hotel but you will be able to take a tour of some of the public rooms on the ground floor, including the impressive Great Hall and famous French Dining Room. These tours take about 30 minutes and the maximum number per tour is 18 people. We have booked two consecutive tours at 11:30 and 11:40. These tours are free if you are a NT member, £2 otherwise. However, they do need to be booked (and paid for) in advance.

The estate has hard gravel paths, some steep slopes, undulating terrain and steps. If you are no longer as mobile as you used to be, you can use the shuttle bus which takes you to most places around the estate. Unfortunately, there are no powered mobility scooters but there are some manual wheelchairs (that need to be booked in advance).

However you get about the garden, you’ll be in need of some refreshments during our visit. The main eatery is The Conservatory Café, where the chefs transform locally sourced ingredients into a selection of hearty homemade lunches and light bites. The Dovecote Coffee Shop is ideal for morning coffee and afternoon tea and there is a refreshment kiosk in the Walled Garden car park. There are also designated picnic areas with benches.

As you might expect, there is a gift shop and plant centre. If you fancy some quiet browsing, then visit the second-hand bookshop where you can pick up a bargain whilst supporting vital conservation work.

If you would like to find out more about the garden and the facilities before you visit, please look at the web site

The coach will leave Tewin from the bus stop opposite the Rose & Crown at 9:00am, and will leave Cliveden for the return journey at 3:30pm.

National Trust members get free entry to the estate but they must bring their membership cards with them on the day. The group rate for entry to the gardens for non-NT members is only £10 and consequently the prices are:-

South Mimms Travel will provide our driver and coach again but this means that we will need to pay for the coach four weeks before the visit, with high cancellation charges after that.  So, if you are interested in this visit, please book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Please fill in the booking form with your details and preferences and then deliver or send it, with your payment, to Ray Keppler, 15 Upper Green Road, Tewin, AL6 0LE as soon as possible and certainly before 26th June
