The Tewin Horticultural Arts and Crafts Society (THACS) aims to promote the good cultivation of gardens and allotments, to foster interest in garden design and plants and to encourage village arts and crafts.

In order to achieve these aims we

  • run Spring and Autumn Shows
  • hold meetings for lectures, demonstrations and workshops
  • organise various outings and other appropriate events
  • produce a regular newsletter and distribute it to all members
  • post information on the society’s pages on the village website.

THACS was formed in 2001 following the Millennium Fund activities, which included Open Gardens and a trip to the RHS gardens at Wisley. It was fueled by the enthusiasm of gardeners and artists of all kinds in Tewin and its continued success is dependent upon that enthusiasm. The society has attracted over two hundred members and many successful events have taken place.

The two annual shows in Spring and Autumn enable residents to take part in competitive but friendly shows which cover flower arranging, horticulture, arts & crafts, photography and culinary in both adult and children's classes. The shows have become an established part of Tewin village life and are usually well-supported by exhibitors and by people just visiting the shows.

Our lectures are usually held in the Tewin Memorial Hall and cover a wide range of subjects. Recent topics have included the life and work of Henry Moore, different aspects of photography, and the history of the English apple. We also have workshops in areas such as art, calligraphy, creative writing, flower arranging, photography and jewellery making

Our outings are just as diverse. There is normally at least one visit to a garden each year and usually other visits to museums or art galleries. For example, in 2014 we had another very successful trip to Wisley and a visit to the National Gallery.

We also organize Open Garden days, in which a variety of private gardens in and around Tewin open for a day. These popular events have been held every two years, and the most recent being in May 2014. In November 2014 we had a very successful arts & crafts fair with a wide variety of items for sale. These fairs have now become an annual event and the next one will be on Saturday 31st October 2015.

THACS also contributes to village life by running the plant stall at the village fete every summer, so helping to raise funds for the Memorial Hall. For several years we ran an annual competition for the Tewin Society Award (TSA) - honouring one local resident each year for continuing to uphold the ideals of the original society - focussing on local heritage, environment, and natural resources, with particular reference to unpaid work inspiring others and achieving lasting effects.

Membership costs £5 per person per year. Annual membership runs to 31 October, but for those joining after 30 June in any year the initial £5 membership fee covers the period until 31 October the following year.

Members receive discounts on THACS outings and event and also receive regular newsletters at no extra charge, so the membership fee represents remarkably good value.
