Calligraphy workshops in Burnham Green Hall

We plan to run four classes over four months this summer, and we would like to offer a few places to any member / members’ friends who would like to join an enthusiastic group of calligraphers.

The classes are open to beginners and improvers alike, and are friendly and helpful. They are tutored by Jo Cooper, who has been our judge at the Spring show for several years, and are held at Burnham Green Hall (with the exception of the date in May this year, which will be run at Tewin Memorial Hall in the Kimberley Room).

The classes are held on Fridays, in the mornings from 11.00am to 1.00pm, and in the afternoons from 2.00pm to 4.00pm. This term the fees are £20.00 for the term, plus any costs of materials. Since the first class on 27th April will have already taken place by the time you read this, newcomers will only have to pay for the classes they attend (at £5 per class). Cheques or cash should be sent / delivered to the Treasurer, Malcolm Allen, 47 Bishops Road, Tewin Wood AL6 0NP as soon as possible.

The dates for the remaining classes are:- 18th May, 29th June and 20th July.

Please note that if you have already paid £15 for three weeks, that there is an additional £5 to pay for the extra week in July.

If you would like to join the group and would like to know more about the classes, please contact Anna Clark on 01438 798324, or email her at mike.tewin@gmail.com.

THACS Open Gardens - Sunday 27th May

As we move from April into May and spring continues, we are hoping for more rain to help our gardens to flourish. Each day brings a new miracle as leaves and buds erupt from every branch.

April was a great month for blossom all around the village. Our trees and flowering shrubs have provided us with a beautiful backdrop and a very welcome, colourful sight after a chilly winter. Now that May has arrived we are able to spend more time outside enjoying the fresh air. The light nights encourage us to be out there putting our gardening ideas into practice.

About ten of our local gardeners, who between them represent a wide variety in style, size and location, are getting prepared to open their gardens to the public on Sunday 27th May 2012. They have been working very hard to bring out the best in their gardens and would love to show you around them, so do come along.

Each garden is open from 11.00am to 6.00pm with refreshments and plant sales available at some of them. Entry to the gardens will be by programme, priced at £2 per adult (accompanied children are free). The programmes will include a map detailing the locations of the gardens. Programmes will be available from Tewin Village Stores and Tebbutts Shop in Burnham Green from Monday 30th April and from some of the gardens on the day.

So have a good look at your garden. Are you hoping to change or improve it? Do you need inspiration? Maybe visiting the gardens could be just what you need to get you started, so do come along.

Plant stall at Village Fete on Saturday 30th June 2012

The Tewin Village Fete this year will be on the 30 June and THACS is once again running the plant stall. We need donations of plants (correctly labelled) and helpers for setting up, pricing the plants and running the stall. If you think that you may be able to help in one of more of these activities do get in touch with Nick Whiting on 717230 or by email (nick@whitingn.plus.com).

Many of us have plants in the garden which propagate easily and now is the time to pot up some of these ready for the fete. Also, excess from your sowings could be valuable even though it is a little late in the year. Please do what you can as every bit of money that we make is desperately needed by the village hall.

If you have any plants to donate, then please bring them along to us at the plant stall on Lower Green during the morning of the fete. If this would be inconvenient then you can drop them off before then to either Nick Whiting, 5 Churchfield Road, or Sue Whitbourn, 107 Burnham Green Road.

THACS Autumn Show

The Autumn Show will be held on Saturday 15th September 2012

 Future Events

Jewellery workshops in Homebeads, Knebworth

We hope to organise some more jewellery workshops at Homebeads, Knebworth. If you are interested in attending these, or would like to find out more about them, then please contact Anna Clark, Tewin Orchard, 1 Upper Green, Tewin, Herts AL6 0LX (telephone 01438-798324).

Arts & Crafts fair and sale

We intend to hold another arts & crafts fair and sale in the autumn but can’t give you a date for this yet.

Creative writing workshop & art workshop

We are seeking expressions of interest for a creative writing day and for an art day. Both of them would be run by Frances Wilson who is an accomplished artist and a published author. She often judges the poetry competition at the THACS spring show.

The writing day starts with a selection of exercises to get the creative juices flowing followed by an opportunity to write on a particular subject of your choice, either poetry or prose, and a chance to hear one another.

The subject of the art day is to make experimental / decorative backgrounds on which to develop your paintings, for example, using patterned tissue paper as a base which forms part of the painting.

Both days have been a delight according to Joanne Allen who has attended them in the past. The class can be offered on a full day or half day basis. The full day class has the multiple advantages of a longer time and a shared lunch.

Francis Wilson would charge £50 for a half day and £100 for a full day and will take between four and ten students, so you can see that depending on the amount of interest, this need not be an expensive pleasure. Both classes would be scheduled for the autumn. Please let us know if you would be interested in attending.

To express your interest in either of these workshops or to find out more about them, please contact Joanne Allen (Telephone 01438 798749 or email jrallen14@hotmail.co.uk).
