THACS Sunflower Project

In 2004 it was the Royal Horticultural Society's 'Year Of The Garden'

THACS, (Tewin Horticultural Arts and Crafts Society) organized different ways

to celebrate this occasion.

One was to offer the primary school aged children the opportunity to grow sunflowers.

At the Spring Show, those who wished to participate were given 3 flower pots,

3 bags of different growing mediums and 6 sunflower seeds.

They were free to experiment and also able to use other growing methods.

We asked if they would keep a record of what they observed during the growing time and the results were displayed at the THACS Autumn Show.

Seven children kept a log and each one recorded their work in an original way.

You can see the logs on the following pages.

Unfortunately the process of transferring the original hand-written and coloured logs so that they are readable has meant some adjustment which does not do justice to the lovely bright colours,

in particular the yellows and greens so a bit of imagination is needed to appreciate the art work!
